It’s wonderful when I get a chance to celebrate great educators like KIPP Collegiate Principal Dave Howland (pictured with me here) and Tiffany Smith of Toomer Elementary.

It was exciting and heartening when two APS educators were named 2015 Atlanta Families Award winners last week, enabling them to further use their great powers of education! A team of our district leaders and community stakeholders to surprise them: Toomer Elementary teacher Tiffany Smith, who is also that school’s Teacher of the Year, and KIPP Atlanta Collegiate Founding Principal Dave Howland.

Both of them received large $7,500 checks that gives them money for professional development, personal use and for a special project. Principal Howland has expressed a need for technology for blended learning, while Ms. Smith has a great Magical Math Moments program.

AFAEE has awarded more than $2 million to 100 of our teachers over the past decade. The awards were also a result of WABE’s American Graduate program as a PBS affiliate and a partnership with WSB-TV, which will feature each winner on People 2 People and in other announcement in the coming weeks.

Please read more about them at our Talk Up APS blog, but I wanted to share some photos of my visit to KIPP and my team’s visit Toomer. Congrats to both Principal Howland and Ms. Smith!
