APS Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

What began more than 50 years ago as a week-long celebration of Hispanic heritage and achievement is today commemorated by Presidential Proclamation as a 31-day period complete with a theme, “Hispanics:  A legacy of history, a present of action and a future of success.”

From September 15 to October 15, public officials, educators and all Americans are encouraged to explore Hispanic culture and traditions with special ceremonies and activities that celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Smithsonian, The National Education Association, and PBS (WPBA in Atlanta) all provide resources to help students explore the rich history of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

National Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the celebrations of Independence Day in many Latin American countries—including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Nicaragua celebrates its Independence Day September 15, Mexico on September 16, and Chile on September 18.

Atlanta Public Schools is excited to offer a dual Spanish-English immersion program at two of our elementary schools, D.H. Stanton and Perkerson.  Schools throughout the district will celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with special programs, classroom lessons and conversations about Spanish-speaking countries and cultures.
